This week’s highlights: The Junk Transfer, Lehman Brothers, and Anti-Venom
Happy Friday,
Hope your weekend is a pleasant one.
Jovica Djurdjevic was kind enough to ask me to join him on his Millenial Manhood podcast – episode is here
Cheers,
David
Food for Thought
- The Dispatch – Against Gun Idolatry. Thoughtful piece from David French, a gun owner himself. “The threat to America’s gun culture comes from the gun rights movement itself. The threat is gun idolatry, a form of gun fetish that’s fundamentally aggressive, grotesquely irresponsible, and potentially destabilizing to American democracy.”
- TheGlobeAndMail – The great junk transfer is coming. A look at the burden (and big business) of decluttering as Canadians inherit piles of their parents’ stuff
- NationalGeographic – This man gets bitten by deadly snakes in the name of science. A partnership between an immunologist and a snake-keeping ex-truck mechanic is attempting to find a medicinal holy grail: a universal anti-venom. It’s a seriously risky business.
- NYT – I Married the Wrong Person, and I’m So Glad I Did
- JW – Action is Everything. Comfort should only come after action. After effort. After a little bit of pain.
Business and Markets
- WSJ – Housing, Child Care, Utilities—Nashville Faces Exceptional Inflation Hit From All Sides. Influx of new residents causes housing prices to soar, pushing out some longtime inhabitants; ‘It’s just too expensive’
- WSJ – Blackstone, Other Large Private-Equity Firms Turn Attention to Vast Retail Market
- Slate – All Their Apes Gone. Scammers are stealing those Bored Ape Yacht Club avatars in frankly ludicrous numbers.
- Bloomberg – The Last of Lehman Brothers. The bank whose collapse marked the beginning of the 2008 financial crisis is only mostly dead. These are the people attending to its last remains ahead of its final court cases.
- WashPo – Accountant retires on cruise ships to avoid cost of land living. Angelyn Burk ran the numbers and got her husband onboard with the idea
Science, Technology, and Culture
- Golf – Joe Ogilvie Twitter Thread and NYP – Phil Mickelson, PGA Tour both proving they’ve always been about the money – If you have been following all the Liv controversy
- NYP – Royal photog ‘struggled’ to capture Prince Louis’ wild antics at Jubilee. “I was struggling to keep the camera still as I was chuckling whilst taking these photos, what a character,”
- Gizmodo – Most People’s Livers Are Just 3 Years Old. A new study finds that the average liver is no more than three years old, no matter the age of the person carrying it.
- Eater – Why Are American Chips So Boring? International chip flavors seem to have all the fun. But to get chip flavors like hot pot or fried crab in America, the snack industry would have to change the way it does everything.
- ZachStern – Could the matching imbalance on Tinder and other dating apps be a factor in the rise of the incel movement and young men reporting low sexual activity?
My Book:
When Anything is Possible – Wealth and the Art of Strategic Living
- Does how you handle your wealth actually align with what you care most about in the world?
- Do you feel like you are pro-active and intentional with your financial affairs or entirely reactive to a busy world?
Growing financial wealth is a natural occurrence on the path to success. While this should make life easier, that is not always the case. With greater wealth, comes great opportunity and an overwhelming number of choices to make.
When Anything is Possible is the guidebook about how to engage strategically with wealth. It will help you change your wealth from something overwhelming and all-consuming towards a resource to be deployed to help you positively impact the things that you value most.
