5 Beach Reads to Expand Your Brain

May 30, 2022 | Book Recommendations

Summer is officially here – heat index in Nashville well over 100 degrees this week! As many will be heading out on vacation in the coming weeks/months, I thought I would highlight 5 books I that I have read recently that are quite thought provoking. None of these are long but I found myself reading slowly and pausing frequently to consider the ideas therein. Enjoy!

  • The Life We’re Looking For: Reclaiming Relationship in a Technological World – A deeply reflective primer on creating meaningful connections, rebuilding abundant communities, and living in a way that engages our full humanity in an age of unprecedented anxiety and loneliness—from the author of The Tech-Wise Family
  • Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging We have a strong instinct to belong to small groups defined by clear purpose and understanding–“tribes.” This tribal connection has been largely lost in modern society, but regaining it may be the key to our psychological survival.
  • From Strength to Strength: Finding Success, Happiness, and Deep Purpose in the Second Half of Life. Many of us assume that the more successful we are, the less susceptible we become to the sense of professional and social irrelevance that often accompanies aging. But the truth is, the greater our achievements and our attachment to them, the more we notice our decline, and the more painful it is when it occurs. What can we do, starting now, to make our older years a time of happiness, purpose, and yes, success?
  • The Culture Code: The Secrets of Highly Successful Groups– This was great – “Culture is not something you are—it’s something you do. The Culture Code puts the power in your hands. No matter the size of your group or your goal, this book can teach you the principles of cultural chemistry that transform individuals into teams that can accomplish amazing things together.”
  • The Story of You: An Enneagram Journey to Becoming Your True Self. There are a lot of Enneagram books out there. Ian Morgan Cron’s new one is wonderfully reflective about the negative stories each type of person tells themselves and offers a view on what a movement to health might look like.

Note: All are Amazon links which may pay a very modest commission to me.
